Chance Favors the Prepared Mind: Planning and Improvising in Landscape Photography
Hi, everyone
I hope you are having a good weekend.
"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth," said Mike Tyson—and in landscape photography, that “punch” often comes from the weather. Scouting locations, checking forecasts, and timing the light can set us up for success, but nature rarely sticks to our script. That’s why the ability to adapt and improvise is just as important as planning. Some of my favorite images came from carefully prepared shoots, while others happened by simply embracing the conditions in front of me.
Check out this video presentation at the Worcester County Camera Club where I share stories and examples from my work as a landscape and travel photographer and explain my preparation workflow. I show how different levels of planning — ranging from meticulous preparation to complete spontaneity—can shape your results and help you make the most of any opportunity.
Have a great rest of your weekend and Happy Thanksgiving!
