Workshops, Exhibits, Oh My…

Hi, everyone

I hope you are having a great weekend!

It’s been a while since I sent an update, and a lot has happened since. It’s been a busy time in my life, both as a photographer and on other fronts. Spring is finally here, it seems (despite the projected cool-down next week), and I wanted to give you a heads up about things that are happening.

Exhibits/Awards

Let’s start with some amazing news. My work Reflections at Buttermere has been shortlisted in the Landscape category of the Open Sony World Photography Awards. And even though I didn’t win, it is still a huge, huge honor. To put this into context, this competition is probably the biggest international photography competition out there. The organizers say they received four hundred thousand (400,000 !) submissions from photographers around the world. Obviously not all submissions were in the same category and people submitted multiple images, but that number is still completely insane.

The exhibit opened yesterday in London. I encourage you to check out the shortlist and winner galleries for Landscapes and other categories!

After receiving this honor I decided to offer this image as a limited edition print as either a framed metal, fine art, or a framed fine art prints. I currently have the framed metal print and it looks absolutely stunning. In the future, I plan to offer additional images as limited editions as well. All limited editions come with a certificate of authenticity.

My work currently appears in several exhibits across New England. Check out the Upcoming Events tab for more details. I try to keep that tab up to date. So, you don’t have to wait till my newsletter if you want to know what I am up to.

My image The Brewing Storm in Black and White has been accepted into the Fine Art of Photography exhibit at the Plymouth Center for the Arts. The opening reception is April 25th, 4-6pm. If you would like to attend, you can get the tickets here. It promises to be an excellent exhibit in a beautiful gallery close to the waterfront in Plymouth, MA. I urge you to check it out even if you can’t make it to the reception (it is free to visit the gallery on other days)! The exhibit is going to run April 25th - May 31st.

I am waiting for jury results for a couple of other exhibits, and hope to be able to announce those soon as well. In addition, a big announcement is coming up (hopefully next week). So, stay tuned!

Artfairs

If you would like to meet me and see my work (outside of the exhibit receptions), I will be participating in two art-fairs in May (before taking a break for a busy summer). Check out the Upcoming Events tab for a full list of Art Fairs for the year.

This is the first time I will be participating in the ArtiCulture event. It promises to be a fun event. Paradise City are always excellent. Come visit me at booth 629 this year!

New Workshops

I am happy to announce two exciting workshops running in early June. These are small-group, all inclusive, highly immersive photography workshops. They are appropriate for photographers of any level who would like to level up their skills! Check the workshop announcements here.

In the first workshop (June 1-4) we will spend three nights/four days in the Berkshires/Green Mountains region, where we will photography flowing waterfalls, classic farm scenes of Vermont, and blooming azaleas at the Moore State Park. Our base will be near Holyoke, MA.

The New England Light & Texture Workshop: From Berkshires to the Green Mountains
$1,750.00

The New England Light & Texture Workshop

From the Berkshires to the Green Mountains

Limited to 6 participants (minimum 3) | All-inclusive | Small-group instruction

June 1 – June 4, 2026 | Based in Northampton, MA

Late spring in New England is a season of movement—flowing rivers, fresh foliage, and soft, shifting light.

Join award-winning landscape photographer, Dimitry Papkov, for an immersive four-day photographic journey through the Berkshires and southern Vermont. This workshop is designed for photographers who want to refine their craft and learn to capture mood, atmosphere, and fine-art detail.

There is something about early morning mist, quiet rivers, and the way light settles into the landscape that slows everything down.

This retreat is built around those moments.

From the ethereal flow of Berkshire waterfalls to the iconic rolling farmland of Jenne Farm and the vibrant blooms of Moore State Park, we will explore a diverse range of subjects during one of the most lush and expressive times of year.

The Experience

This is a small-group, all-inclusive workshop designed to give you both space and support in the field.

Rather than rushing between locations, we focus on how to see, respond to conditions, and translate what you feel into a strong image.

You will learn how to:

  • Use long exposures to shape water, motion, and mood

  • Work with polarizers and ND filters to control reflections and contrast

  • Build stronger compositions from wide landscapes to intimate details

  • Create depth and structure through light, layering, and focal length choices

  • Simplify complex scenes into clean, expressive images

The workshop also includes a follow-up image critique/post-processing Zoom session, helping you carry the experience into your editing workflow.

Itinerary Highlights

The itinerary is flexible and may be adjusted based on weather and conditions.

  • Day 1 – The Berkshires
We begin with an afternoon session in the Berkshires, followed by sunset at Hairpin Turn, overlooking sweeping mountain layers.

  • Day 2 – Water & Vistas
A morning at Enders Falls in CT, followed by an intimate afternoon at Gunn Brook Falls. We finish with a golden hour at Mount Sugarloaf, capturing the winding Connecticut River.

  • Day 3 – Vermont Icons
A pre-dawn departure brings us to sunrise at Jenne Farm. We continue through Sleepy Hollow Farm, historic covered bridges, and Quechee Gorge before returning south.

  • Day 4 – The June Bloom
We conclude at Moore State Park, focusing on macro and landscape photography among peak rhododendron and azalea blooms.

Is This Workshop For You?

This workshop is ideal for photographers who want to move beyond simply documenting a scene and begin creating more intentional, expressive images.

Whether you are refining your technical skills or developing your artistic voice, you’ll have the time, guidance, and support to grow your portfolio in a meaningful way.

If you’ve ever felt drawn to those quiet moments when light and landscape come together, this workshop is for you.

To ensure a high-quality experience, the workshop is limited to a maximum of six participants. Early booking is highly recommended.

What to Bring?

  • Camera: DSLR, mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera or a bridge camera. While a smartphone can be used, it will significantly limit your creative options

  • Lenses: Lenses ranging from ultra-wide to telephoto are appropriate. We will work on matching the focal length to the scene

  • Filters: A circular polarizer and neutral density (ND) filters are highly recommended for long-exposure water effects. A limited number of filters will be available from the instructor on a first-come, first-served basis

  • A Sturdy Tripod: This is a must for our low-light and waterfall sessions

  • Accessories: Spare batteries, extra memory cards, and a remote shutter release (wired or wireless). Optional: a reflector for flower/macro photography at the Moore State Park

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots/shoes for uneven terrain. Waterproof boots or "boundary socks" are highly recommended if you wish to step into the shallow areas of the falls for better compositions.

  • Protection: Rain gear for your camera and yourself

  • Review (optional): A laptop or tablet for viewing and backing up your images during our midday breaks.

Fitness and Pace

This Workshop is Rated as Easy-to-Moderate

This workshop is designed to be accessible to most participants, with short walks to each location (typically under half a mile).

We will be photographing in wooded and waterfall environments, which involve uneven terrain, roots, and rocks. Participants should be comfortable being sure-footed in these environments, as surfaces near water can be wet and slippery.

The Quechee Gorge Hike: On Day 3, there is an optional hike to the bottom of Quechee Gorge. While relatively short, the return climb is steep. Those who prefer not to make the descent can photograph from the overlook above, which offers excellent vantage points.

Note on Pacing: This workshop includes full, rewarding days, including our 2:45 AM "Alpine Start" for the Vermont sunrise. We move at a pace that encourages intentional seeing, while building in downtime where possible to balance productivity with enjoyment.

In the second workshop (June 6-11) we will spend 5 nights/6 days exploring the Maine coast (mid-coast and Acadia National Park). We will start near Rockport, ME, explore iconic lighthouses, lupine fields (hopefully!) and some beautiful abstract rock strata. After that we will move to the Acadia National Park and explore both some iconic as well as some less known locations.

The Maine Coastal & Acadia Photography Workshop: Mid-Coast to Mount Desert Island
$3,150.00

Limited to 6 participants (minimum 3) | All-inclusive | Small-group instruction

June 6 – 11, 2026

Join award-winning landscape photographer Dimitry Papkov for a six-day immersive photography experience along the rugged coast of Maine, designed for photographers who want to create compelling, portfolio-worthy images while working closely in a small group setting. This workshop is designed to take you beyond the postcards, capturing the raw, atmospheric beauty of New England’s most iconic landscapes from the towering lighthouses of the Mid-coast to the pink granite shores of Acadia National Park.

Timed for early June, we may encounter blooming lupine fields alongside mist-covered harbors and dramatic coastal cliffs.

With a maximum of six participants, this workshop offers a highly personalized experience, more akin to private guiding than a traditional group workshop.

The Experience

This workshop balances technical precision with creative vision. Whether we are capturing the classic silhouette of Pemaquid Point Light or the intimate textures of a moss-covered forest floor, the focus remains on composition, light, and narrative.

  • We begin on Maine’s mid-coast, where fishing villages, rocky headlands, and classic lighthouses provide a rich introduction to coastal photography. From the layered granite formations of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse to the elegant lines of Marshall Point Lighthouse, you’ll work with dynamic foregrounds, long exposures, and changing light conditions. A sunrise overlooking Camden Harbor and a morning on the water in Penobscot Bay add both variety and a deeper connection to the landscape.

  • Midway through the workshop, we transition to Acadia—one of the most photogenic locations on the East Coast. Here, the focus shifts to dramatic coastal scenes: wave-washed boulders, carved granite cliffs, and expansive ocean views. Locations such as Boulder Beach, Monument Cove, and the quieter reaches of the Schoodic Peninsula offer endless compositional opportunities, from intimate abstracts to sweeping seascapes.

  • Rather than following a rigid schedule, the Acadia portion of the workshop remains intentionally flexible. We adapt each day based on weather, light, and group energy, maximizing our chances of being in the right place at the right time. Whether it’s chasing soft fog along the coast, positioning for the best sunrise light, or returning to a location when conditions improve, this approach ensures a more rewarding and creative experience.

  • Throughout the workshop, you’ll receive hands-on guidance in the field along with optional image review and editing sessions. We’ll cover composition, exposure techniques (including long exposures), working with changing light, and refining your images in post-processing. With a maximum of six participants, there is plenty of opportunity for individual attention and tailored feedback.

  • If conditions allow, we will also explore opportunities for night photography, including Milky Way images.

  • This workshop is designed not just to help you capture compelling images, but to slow down, observe, and respond to the landscape—finding those quieter, more personal moments that define strong photography.

  • By the end of the workshop, you’ll come away with a diverse portfolio of coastal and landscape images, along with a stronger understanding of how to work with light, composition, and conditions in the field.

The Itinerary Highlights

Itinerary is subject to change. We may switch up days, shoot orders, etc. to accommodate for changing weather and the pace of the group.

  • A carefully curated blend of iconic locations and lesser-known viewpoints

  • The Iconic Lighthouses: Sunrise and sunset sessions at Pemaquid Point, Marshall Point, Owl’s Head, and Bass Harbor.

  • Peak Lupines: Afternoon shoot in the vibrant wildflower field unique to early June.

  • Maritime Perspective: A morning sail on Penobscot Bay for unique water-level compositions of the coastline.

  • The Schoodic Wilds: An evening on the Schoodic Peninsula, the quieter, more rugged side of Acadia, perfect for dramatic cliff-side photography and potential Milky Way sessions.
